Berklee Awards Scholarships to Puerto Rican Musicians

Berklee College of Music and Mendez & Company, Inc. teamed to award

$73,000 in scholarships to 10 young Puerto Rican musicians on June 3 for the

“Berklee in Puerto Rico” graduation ceremony held at Escuela Libre de Musica

in Hato Rey.

Francisco Cruz (alto sax), Pedro Bermudez (piano), Cesar Vega (bass), Elias

Santana (trumpet), Nanette Velez Martinez (flute), Eduardo Radriquez Mercado

(baritone sax), Daniel Ramirez (trumpet), David Freyre Cuegas (percussion),

Natanael Afanador Villa (alto sax) and Jose Rivera Ramirez (bass) received

scholarships to attend Berklee.

“Berklee in Puerto Rico” began seven years ago and has given away

almost $400,000 in scholarship money to its participants. Held annually in conjunction with the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest, the program is a weeklong, concentrated course in the Berklee method of performance and

instrumental instruction. This year, over 150 young musicians participated

in the program.

Berklee is the largest and most culturally diverse music school in the

world. Over 35 percent of the 3,300 students enrolled are international

students. Among the college’s talented alumni are Quincy Jones, Melissa Ethridge, Paula Cole, Diana Krall and John Scofield.
