Bill Cosby, Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock (pictured) and Paul Simon are just a few of the performers scheduled to take part in the Berklee 60th Anniversary Concert, which will raise money for the Boston music school’s scholarship fund, according to a written release from Berklee.
The concert, which will take place Jan. 28 in Boston, will support Berklee’s Presidential Scholarship fund. The school will use the concert proceeds to create an annual scholarship in the performers’ names.
Each year for the next ten years, Berklee will award the scholarship to one student who has the energy and creativity to succeed, but lacks the necessary financial resources. All tuition, housing and fees will be covered by the scholarship.
A portion of concert proceeds will also be earmarked for Berklee’s online learning program.
The concert, called “Three Score: The Berklee College of Music 60th Anniversary Concert,” will be held at 8 p.m. at Boston’s Wang Theatre. Tickets prices range from $48 to $98. Other performers include former Berklee president Gary Burton, Juan Luis Guerra, Phil Ramone and Michel Camilo.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
