Ben Ratliff’s Coltrane book tentatively slated for September release

New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff details the development and legacy of John Coltrane’s technique and compositions in his forthcoming book, Coltrane: The Story of a Sound.

In addition to exploring the life of the renowned saxophonist, Ratliff’s book delves into Trane’s music’s influence on jazz as it exists today. Ratliff aims to uncover why Coltrane was such a powerful figure in jazz history and why he is still considered so influential. The book also examines how Coltrane’s music evolved in the jazz pedagogy.

The book’s tentative publication date is September 2007.

Ben Ratliff has been writing at the New York Times since 1996. This is second book, following his New York Times Essential Library: Jazz, published in 2002.
