In February, Bela Fleck (pictured left) and the Flecktones will release a DVD featuring live concert footage culled from two shows in Fairfield, Conn. Entitled Live at the Quick, the disc will present the Flecktones’ genre-skipping mix of bluegrass, jazz and pop in 5.1 Dolby Surround sound and will also include special features such as band and guest musician interviews and documentary footage. Guest musicians featured in the concert include tabla player Sandip Burman, steel drummer Andy Narell and Tuvan throat singer Congar Ol’Ondar.
The DVD’s release date, Feb. 12, 2002, will also see the release of a companion CD on Columbia. And for DirecTV subscribers, Live at The Quick will in fact premiere in January, in a special “Freeview” presentation. The concert show will air 24 hours a day on Jan. 1, 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, and 26.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
