Bebo Valdés: Bebo

Bebo Valdés represents one of the few remaining icons of the bygone era of classic Cuban music. His legendary status as pianist, composer, bandleader and arranger during the 1940s and ’50s paired him with such greats as Nat “King” Cole, Rita Montaner, Rolando Laserie and Benny Moré, and his recent success and rejuvenation in the company of flamenco artist Diego el Cigala, his appearance in Spanish filmmaker Fernando Trueba’s Calle 54 as well as numerous Recording Academy nods reminds us that it is never too late to try something new. In this Latin Grammy-winning solo piano release, Bebo shares with the world his love and passion for his homeland and its wealth of timeless rhythms and melodies, and gives one of the most moving performances of his career. This album is pure Bebo, from his nuanced takes on historical gems by Lecuona, Saumel and Cervantes, to jazzier versions of classic rumbas; Bebo reminds anyone in love with Cuban music just why we should pay tribute to these legendary composers. Reading his words in the album notes, you will be struck by his deeply personal reflections on the significance of each and every piece; listening to this album, you will quite possibly be moved to tears.
