Bassist Victor Wooten Releases First Live Album

Considering how much Victor Wooten’s music depends on improvisation to deliver its punch, it’s surprising Wooten hasn’t released a live album until now. The forthcoming Live in America, due Oct. 9 from Compass, should be a welcome addition to any Wooten fan’s collection as it features 18 tracks of the Flecktones’ bassist doing his own thing with band members Regi Wooten, Joseph Wooten, JD Blair and MC Divinity as well as special guests Marcus Miller, Michael Kott and Bootsy Collins.

The 18 performances include new versions of songs from Wooten’s studio albums along with new tunes written on the road and stretched out on the stage. Among them are an extended jam with fellow bassist Miller and the first performance of “Good People,” where Wooten, having neglected to write a second verse, had to wing it.
