Barry Harris’ Piano Benefit

Pianist Barry Harris (pictured left) is one of bebop’s last guiding lights and one of jazz’s most respected teachers. But it’s tough to teach on a piano that would be better off in the back of some Old West saloon or at the bottom of a trash heap.

A group of Harris’ friends, colleagues and students are banding together for a benefit concert to raise money to buy the educator a new tool for his trade and other teaching equipment. This concert will take place on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 10 p.m., at the Cross Path Cultural Center on 135 West 50th Street (between 6th & 7th avenues) in New York City. The suggested donation is $20.

Harris will play and special Guests will include:

Randy Weston

Abbey Lincoln

Wynton Marsalis

Roy Hargrove

Justin Robinson

Kiani Zawadi

John Hicks

Rodney Kendricks

Rhonda Ross

Mulgrew Miller

Leroy Williams

Thomas Bramarie
