Barry Harris: For the Moment

An attractive feature of this release is that it is also a CD ROM, complete with six short video clips. Haslanger is a highly accomplished saxophonist who suggests a number of influences, Coltrane for one, but still projects a sound of his own. On this live date he blows hard and fast-witness the opener, “For the Moment,” and “Cherokee”-or measured and thoughtful, as he does on the ballads, “For Heaven’s Sake” and “Stella by Starlight,” where he uses a breathy approach and lots of vibrato. This is a swinging, cohesive ensemble, with Frederick Sanders on piano, Edwin Livingston, on bass, and J.J. Johnson on drums. Sanders struts his stuff on “Miles’ Mode” and has a formidable solo on “But Not For Me.” Livingston is replaced on bass by Jeff Haley on “For Heaven’s Sake.” The title cut is an original composition by Haslanger. McCoy Tyner’s “Passion Dance” closes out the program.
