B Sharp Jazz Quartet: Searching for The One

Music with a message is the focus of B Sharp Jazz Quartet, literally. The album opens and closes with urban-inspired free verse recited to a deep jazz groove by drummer Herb Graham, Jr., who also has written most of the 11 original charts, two with keyboardist Rodney Lee.

The musical concept is versatile, free-flowing and heavily rhythmic, accented by numerous superb solos, such as Randall Willis’ tenor on Lee’s “Twelve Tone Blues” and his own “Double Standard.” Lee’s B-3 riffs and bassist Osama Afifi’s high-energy push add to the quartet’s impact. The spirit is fresh, the playing versatile, stimulating and great listening. In the closing verse, Graham urges, “This groove, take it home.” Absolutely, take this one home. – Patricia Myers
