Avishai Cohen: Colors

On Colors, Avishai Cohen leads an expansive session of 13 originals featuring his septet with guest percussionists and a string quartet. Although this third album is more a showcase for his writing-arranging skills, Cohen excels compatibly on acoustic and electric bass, Fender Rhodes and vocals. His band includes drummer Jeff Ballard, pianist Jason Lindner, reedman Jimmy Greene and trombonists Avi Lebovich and Steve Davis. Assorted rhythms and harmonies make their music fulfilling for the adventurous listener. Sometimes things get a little busy but their horns-colored, World-influenced music-ranging from cool- to warm-toned-remains captivating throughout. Bolstered by three years of collaborations with Chick Corea’s Origins ensemble, Cohen displays a more seasoned approach since Adama, his 1998 solo recording debut, and this ultra-imaginative date blows like a fresh breeze through your soul.
