Arturo O’Farrill Educates on Latin Jazz with Brief Tour

From years of experience in school and hospital cafeterias we learn to be extra cautious of items on the menu that bear exotic names. Something called “Arroz con Bebop,” (translation: rice with bebop) should raise a red flag immediately. It sounds almost as suspicious as those mysterious meals labeled “Manager’s Choice.”

But the schools, hospitals and community programs that have “Arroz con Bebop” on their schedules have nothing to worry about with regard to lost appetites and vats of leftovers. “Arroz con Bebop,” as the name sort of suggests, is actually an educational program about Latin jazz that will tour the New York City area in mid-March.

The program is the seventh installment of Jazz at Lincln Center’s Jazz in the Schools Tour, led this time by pianist Arturo O’Farrill (pictured left) and featuring his Latin Jazz Quintet. Over the course of 12 days, and 24 performances, O’Farrill and the ensemble will explore the common roots of jazz and Latin music, their stylistic characteristics, similarities, and differences, and the importance of artists like Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Machito, Mario Bauza, Tito Puente and Arturo’s father Chico O’Farrill in shaping the sound of Latin jazz. Musical selections will include “Timonbo,” “Manteca,” “Mambo Inn,” “Oye Como Va,” and other bebop standards, ragtime songs, habaneras, and danzons. Considering the program’s name, requests for Sonny Rollins’ “Arroz con Pollo” will likely be honored.
