Artists Entertain and Educate in Pittsburgh

Oscar Brashear, Curtis Fuller, Donald Byrd and Winard Harper were among musicians present at this year’s

annual Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar and Concert, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh in early November.

The musicians instructed and lectured students at six workshops and performed on stage at three community concerts

and a larger show at Carnegie Music Hall.

The Carnegie concert was a fine outlet for solos by saxophonist Benny Golson and Brashear, whose trumpet climbed high into the

upper register on versions of “Three Blind Mice” and “What’s New.” The late Grover Washington Jr. was honored during the set-break with the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award.

His son, Grover Washington III, was there to accept the award.
