Art Pepper: The Art of the Ballad

Opening with the haunting “Winter Moon” from a 1980 session with strings, Art shows his off his style and chops from all the eras of his all-too-short career. His work on “‘Round Midnight” is noteworthy; a Marty Paich arrangement with a big band of some of the hottest West Coast cats in 1959. The tone he projected on his 1982 recording on “Over the Rainbow” is truly penetrating, and it was only two months before his death.
