April Aloisio: Easy to Love

April Aloisio’s wistful timbre casts a different kind of spell over ballads from the Great American Songbook, often endowing them with a fascinating ethereal quality. However, frequent intonation problems and several shrill segments interfere with the full appreciation of her urbane vulnerability. Von Freeman dispenses rich acoustic piano on two segued interpretations of “Easy to Love,” then takes up tenor to weave “Night and Day” into a delicate duet. Talented keyboardist Steve Million and guitarist Dave Onderdonk contribute excellent segments on various tracks.
