Anson Funderburgh/Sam Myers: That’s What They Want

They formed their unique partnership 11 years ago, and over the years Anson Funderburgh & Sam Myers have forged the kind of chemistry that money just can’t buy. On their fourth album together, That’s What They Want (Black Top 1140; 45:56), the soulful Texas guitarist combines with the leather-lunged singer and harmonica player from the Mississippi Delta on tunes that range from New Orleans rock ‘n’ soul (Eddie Bo’s “Oh-Oh”) to mournful slow blues (Myers’ “The Dew Is Falling” and “I Don’t Want You Cutting Off Your Hair”) and spirited swing-blues (Myers’ “I’ve Been Dogged By Women”). Myers summons up the imposing spirit of Muddy Waters on the title track, with its direct reference to “Mannish Boy” and on Muddy’s “The Meanest Woman.” And he has some fun with Delbert McClinton’s raunchy rocker “Monkey Around.” Funderburgh’s instrumental B-3 fueled shuffle, “Mudslide,” is an obvious homage to the late, great Albert Collins. And for something completely different he plays a six string bass through a flanger and a wah-wah pedal on the raucous closer, “I’m Shakin’.” One of the great tag teams in blues today.
