Blue Note announced last week the signing of pianist/composer Andrew Hill, for his third era at the label, and the upcoming release of Hill’s new album, Time Lines. Since recording his debut at the label 42 years ago, with the release of Black Fire, Hill has recorded 16 albums for Blue Note, with additional releases through labels as varied as Steeplechase, Soul Note and Palmetto. Returning to Blue Note, Hill said, was natural, as the label treated him well and he had left the label for no other reason than it was simply the way his career panned out.
While Hill said he never compares albums, he did say that Time Lines, which is due out Feb. 22, 2006, features all original songs with his quintet, featuring trumpeter Charles Tolliver, saxophonist and clarinetist Greg Tardy, bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson.
