Alyson Williams: It’s About Time

In the early ’90s, Alyson Williams had a massive R&B hit with “Just Call My Name,” but the husky-voiced singer fell off the radar screen shortly thereafter. She continued performing, however, and has returned with It’s About Time (Three Keys), her first album in 13 years. The songs on It’s About Time chronicle the arc of a relationship, from the bliss of new love to the trauma of a split the day before the wedding, to the difficult post-breakup aftermath. In addition to demonstrating her musical range, Williams-who’s also an actress-gets the chance to flex a little acting muscle, particularly on “Tomorrow,” an explosive breakup song convincingly performed with singer Tony Terry (another underheralded talent who dropped out of the spotlight too soon). The Simply Red hit “Holding Back the Years” has been covered numerous times before, but it fits well in the context of this narrative, and with her rueful take, Williams puts her own stamp on the song. It’s About Time is a satisfying return from a much-missed artist.
