Alvin Youngblood Hart: Territory

Folklorist Alvin Youngblood Hart is a virtuoso by comparison. On Territory (Hannibal 1431; 46:40) he tackles Skip James’ “Illinois Blues” with milky reverb and plays charming 12-string guitar and mandolin on his original “Ouachita Run.” On the swinging “Talhacatcha” he sounds like Jimmie Rogers or Bob Wills. The haunting “Countryside” is awash in Daniel Lanois-styled production values while “Dancing With Tears In My Eyes” is a pure delight. Hart’s obvious command of Piedmont and Delta styles is beautifully balanced by a sincere and soulful expression that makes this one a pleasurable listening experience.
