All-Star Jazz Band Gives Aretha Respect

You should be ashamed if you missed the all-star tribute to Aretha Franklin on

VH1 April 10. In the parade of stars that included Janet Jackson, three-fifths

of the Backstreet Boys, Jill Scott, and Kid Rock, there was an

exceptional jazz band united just for the show. Drummer Roy Haynes, bassist Ron

Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonist James Carter, and guitarist

Russell Malone backed Aretha for an uptempo blues jam, but it was trumpeter

Clark Terry scatting with Aretha that was the highlight of the collaboration.

If you did miss the two-hour VH1 Divas program, don’t worry as VH1

will be re-airing the program throughout the spring. Check out www.vh1.com for

air times.
