You should be ashamed if you missed the all-star tribute to Aretha Franklin on
VH1 April 10. In the parade of stars that included Janet Jackson, three-fifths
of the Backstreet Boys, Jill Scott, and Kid Rock, there was an
exceptional jazz band united just for the show. Drummer Roy Haynes, bassist Ron
Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonist James Carter, and guitarist
Russell Malone backed Aretha for an uptempo blues jam, but it was trumpeter
Clark Terry scatting with Aretha that was the highlight of the collaboration.
