Alice Coltrane (pirctured) and her sons Ravi and Oran, along with Branford Marsalis and tap dancer Savion Glover will appear on the same bill at the 2004 Evening of Jazz benefiting the John Coltrane Foundation on September 30 at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles.
Pianist/harpist Alice, the widow of the late tenor saxophone giant, is the night’s featured performer. Her first album in 26 years, Translinear Light, is due out Sept. 28 on Impulse. Glover will perform with his new Coltrane-inspired band If Trane Wuz Here.
The performance begins at 8 p.m. A VIP reception will precede the concert at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $100.
The John Coltrane Foundation was established in 2001, in honor of the saxophonist’s 75th birthday, with the mission to promote the legacy of Coltrane’s creative contributions to music and to continue his spirit of giving and artistic excellence. The foundation supports programs to elevate the integrity of jazz, and this performance will raise funds for the John Coltrane Scholarship Fund.
