Aldo Romano Quartet: Canzoni

Quite appropriately, drummer Romano takes a back seat on these performances of Italian Songbook standards by his quartet, a tight unit featuring 1950s Miles Davis-influenced trumpeter Paolo Fresu with pianist Franco D’Andrea and bassist Furio Di Castri. The style is laid-back throughout, with Fresu alternating between softly-intoned open and Harmon-muted sounds and the rhythm team in perfect, tastefully balanced synch both behind him and in their own respective solo spots. Among the ten tunes are “T’ho voluto bene” (“Non dimenticar”), “Tome a Surriento” (“Come Back To Sorrento”), “O sol mio,” “Anima e core,” “Come prima” and “Senza Fine.”
