A Great Friday in Harlem

Did you know that Harlem is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New York City? And with many celebrities and artists returning to live in this famous neighborhood, Harlem may very well be entering into its second cultural Renaissance. Concert producer Alexa Birdsong is hoping to capture some of the area’s musical magic with a new Friday concert series at the intimate Black Box Theater in Aaron Davis Hall, located at West 135th Avenue and Convent Avenue. The series, Harlem’s Black Box – Live, will feature a wide range of musical styles, with an emphasis on creative jazz. Opening the series on Friday, March 23 were singers Lenora Zenzalai Helm and Claudia Acuna (pictured left).

Upcoming shows in the series:

April 13: EL MOlennium. The music of legendary Elmo Hope authentically interpreted by an ensemble led by his widow, pianist Bertha Hope.

May 25: Baritone saxophonist Hamiett Bluiett

June 8: Tamar Kali and Daniel Bernard Roumain
