A Different Kind of Piano Trio

On April 5, Dick Hyman will go one-up on Ferrante and Teicher by playing in a three, count ’em, three-piano concert with Marian McPartland and classical pianist Ruth Laredo. “Three Piano Crossover” combines the experience of two jazz veterans and a classical virtuoso in a program that explores the connections between jazz and classical music. The unusual event will be held at Orchestra Hall in Detroit, Mich.

McPartland actually has experience playing in multi-piano ensembles. At 20 she left the Guildhall School of Music to join a four-piano vaudeville. Detroit native Ruth Laredo is an accomplished classical pianist particularly renowned for her recordings of Rachmaninoff’s solo piano music and Scriabin’s piano sonatas. Hyman, who brainstormed and designed the concept, hopes the artists’ collaboration will allow the audience to observe and enjoy the connections between two distinct musical genres.
