A Contest Actually Decided in Florida?

The 18th Annual Great American Jazz Piano Competition was held in Jacksonville, Florida this November. Hosted by WJCT Public Broadcasting and director/composer Sam Fricano, the competition was held before a packed house. Judges awarded Matt King of New Jersey with the first prize honor of $3,500 and a spot in the WJCT Jacksonville Jazz Festival’s performance the following Saturday. King, an accomplished musician from the age of 14, has performed with several symphonies, toured with Blood Sweat & Tears, and has had guest appearances on the Today Show and Good Morning America. Donald Vega of Los Angeles won the second place prize receiving $1,500 and a third place prize went to Joe Gilman of Sacramento. Runners up for the competition were awarded cash prizes as well.
