From November 19-24 the 3rd Annual Django Reinhardt NY Festival will be held at Birdland with two shows each evening. The festival’s mission is “to bring the best players (known and unknown) of the Django style of music to New York so that the public can see and enjoy the passion and excitement of ‘gypsy swing jazz’.” The festival also provides an arena for European and American jazz performers to collaborate, in many cases for the first time. As an added bonus, this year’s Festival will also feature a workshop with French guitarists Angelo DeBarre and Dorado Schmitt. There will also be a free concert sponsored by the Midori and Friends foundation at a school in Harlem.
European artists appearing will be guitarist and violinist Dorado Schmitt and his son, guitarist Samson Schmitt, guitarist Angelo Debarre, guitarist Michel DeLacroix and accordionist Ludovic Beier, along with bassist Brian Torff. American musicians performing will be sax player James Carter, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, saxophonist Bob Kindred, saxophonist and flutist Frank Weiss, violinist Charles Wizen and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli.
