Herbie Hancock (pictured), the Pete Escovedo Orchestra with Sheila E. and the Laws Family will headline the 30th annual Atlanta Jazz Festival at Piedmont Park from May 26 to May 28.
The festival will also feature the Bad Plus, the Charles Tolliver Big Band, Mike Phillips and many other artists. In addition to the scheduled concerts, the whole city of Atlanta will be immersed in the 31 Day of Jazz, with performances at local nightclubs and bars.
This year’s festival has a few new additions – the Future of Jazz stage will showcase Ken Ford, Joe Sommerville, William Green, Yonrico Scott and other younger artists. Also, the Digital Village will provide attendees with the latest in music technology; including onsite downloads from the festival performers.
But before the festival kicks off, the city of Atlanta has several other jazz offerings as part of the Soulful Sounds of the City Concert Series at Chastain Park Amphitheatre. On April 14, legendary jazz musicians George Benson and Al Jarreau will perform, and May 12, Joe Sample and Randy Crawford come to town. Closing out the season, Lady Soul, Aretha Franklin will play the Amphitheatre after the festival on September 1.
