2007 Festival of New Trumpet Music Lineup Announced

The lineup has been announced for the 2007 Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT), and this 5th edition of Dave Douglas’ annual brass bash in NYC is a killer; an expectedly stellar and eclectic schedule of genre-blurring commissions and exploratory collaborations. Curators for 2007 include Taylor Ho Bynum, Mark Gould and Jeremy Pelt. The festival is scheduled Sept. 15-30.

A few highlights of this year’s FONT:

Douglas (pictured) will premiere “Blue Latitudes,” a piece for solo trumpet, chamber orchestra, bass and percussion, in a program also featuring Mark Applebaum and Huang Ruo at the Manhattan School of Music’s Borden Auditorium, Sept. 16, starting at 8 p.m.

The Kenny Wolleson Big Band will play a set featuring the music of Sarah Wilson, Sept. 19, at the Tea Lounge, 10 p.m.

Douglas and Pelt will give the world premiere of their “Inspiration” collaboration on Sept. 20 at Jazz Standard. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Jason Palmer will premiere a new FONT commission with his quintet and special guest Greg Osby on Sept. 23 at Jazz Standard. Sets start at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Avant-garde maestro Anthony Braxton will give the world premiere of “Composition 169 for Brass Quintet” as well as the New York premiere of “Composition 103 for Seven Trumpets” at St. Mark’s Church, Sept. 23, 2 p.m.

Laurel Andel, with Taylor Ho Bynum and Gamelan Son of Lion, will premiere a FONT commission at St. Mark’s on Sept. 23 at 3:30 p.m. The piece utilizes cornet and electric piano with traditional gamelan sounds.

“The Mystic Trumpeter,” a program dedicated to Lester Bowie, will take place at the Eldridge Street Synagogue on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. The concert will feature Natsuke Tamura, Amir El Saffar and Dr. Mark Harvey.
