Jazz Writers Honored at ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards

Honorees include Jazz Baroness biographer, JT editor

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the 44th Annual ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards were held at the ASCAP Gallery in New York City. Jazz-related winners honored that evening included JazzTimes editor Evan Haga, who received an award for his article “Night and Day: Jazz Meets Heavy Metal,” published in the July/August 2011 issue. Ed Hazell received an award for his liner notes to the NoBusiness label release Black Man’s Blues by Billy Bang’s Survival Ensemble.

JT contributor David Kastin accepted a Timothy White Award for Outstanding Popular Music Biography for Nica’s Dream: The Life and Legend of the Jazz Baroness (W.W. Norton and Company), his bio of Pannonica de Koenigswarter.

Clark Terry and his wife and co-writer, Gwen Terry, were honored with a Timothy White Award as well, for Terry’s autobiography, Clark, published by the University of California press. Trumpeter and Terry protégé Jon Faddis accepted the award on their behalf and performed a duet with pianist David Hazeltine.

In the Radio category, an award went to Beale Street Caravan. That roots-music program’s executive producer, singer and guitarist Sid Selvidge, performed a Furry Lewis song.
