Latin Grammys for D’Rivera, Corea/Clarke/White
Awards are first following elimination of Latin Jazz category from main Grammys
Among the winners of the 2011 Latin Grammy Awards, announced last night in Las Vegas, were two jazz albums. Winning for Best Latin Jazz Album was Panamericana Suite by Paquito D’Rivera, and taking the prize for Best Instrumental Album was Forever by Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. The awards are the first following an outcry earlier by artists this year when the Latin Jazz category was among those eliminated from the traditional main Grammy awards. Although many artists and music industry protested the trimming of the number of awards—more than 30 categories were cut in all—the Recording Academy refused to reinstitute them.
