Phil Woods Named BNY Mellon Jazz 2011 Living Legacy Awardee
Saxophonist to be honored at ceremony on October 14, 2011 at Kennedy Center in Washington, DC
Following in the footsteps of Roy Haynes, Benny Golson, Clark Terry, and many other jazz masters, saxophonist Phil Woods will be presented the BNY Mellon Jazz 2011 Living Legacy Award. On Friday, October 14, 2011, the award will be bestowed upon him in a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The commemoration includes not only the award ceremony, but also will have a reception and the 2010 Legacy Awardee, Roy Haynes, performing in the Terrace Theatre.
Sponsored by BNY Mellon, the BNY Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award is a program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. BNY Mellon is a global financial services company, while the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation is a group that helps create and supports art programming. Created in 1979, the Foundation is a private non-profit organization that has close ties with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Living Legacy Award was established in 1994 by the Foundation and was created to honor living jazz masters from the mid-Atlantic region who have made significant contributions towards the development and the preservation of jazz.
