Dates for New Orleans' Jazz Fest Announced

Jazz Fest will continue to be held in New Orleans, even after the devastation caused by Hurriance Katrina. Officials recently announced that this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will be held April 28-30 and May 5-7 in its usual location at the Fair Ground’s Race Course.

Festival producer Quint Davis said in a press release that he expects the festival to serve as a homecoming for many New Orleans musicians and residents who were displaced by the hurricane.

Davis added that officials were only able to keep the festival in New Orleans because of corporate sponsorship: Shell will be Jazz Fest’s first-ever presenting sponsor.

Fats Domino (pictured), who was airlifted from his home during the hurricane, is the only confirmed performer. He is also featured on the official Jazz Fest poster, which was designed by New Orleans artist James Michalopoulos. The full festival line-up will be released later this month.

Officials said that keeping Jazz Fest in New Orleans is another step in the healing process for the city. “The homecoming of Jazz Fest is a key component to restoring the unique cultural fabric of New Orleans,” Shell Executive Vice President Marvin E. Odum said in a press release.

Tickets for the 2006 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival are available at the festival Web site, Ticketmaster and the Jazz Fest ticket offices. A limited number of tickets for each Friday show are on sale for $20 through Feb. 15. Day-passes are $30 in advance and $40 at the gate. Tickets for children under age 12 are $5 in advance or at the gate. Weekend passes are also available.
