Vijay Iyer to Premiere “Open City,” Featuring 20-Piece Band

New Jersey performances will take place Oct. 4-5

Pianist and composer Vijay Iyer will premier what is described in a press release as his largest work to-date, Open City, at Peak Performances at Montclair State University, Montclair, N.J., October 4 and 5.

The new work, performed in what’s described as a “big band” format, borrows its title from Teju Cole’s novel of the same name. Open City features a 20-person band with Cole and poet/rapper Himanshu Suri serving as “occasional” narrators. The lineup features Iyer, piano, Fender Rhodes, electronic; Ambrose Akinmusire trumpet; Jonathan Finlayson trumpet; Adam O’Farrill, trumpet; Graham Haynes, cornet, flugelhorn; Steve Coleman, alto sax; Hafez Modirzadeh, alto and tenor sax; Mark Shim, tenor sax; Elena Pinderhughes, flute and vocals; Josh Roseman, bass trombone , tuba; Tyshawn Sorey, trombone, percussion; Mat Maneri, viola; Okkyung Lee, cello; Patricia Franceschy, vibraphone; Rafiq Bhatia, guitar; Harish Raghavan, bass; Marcus Gilmore, drums; Rajna Swaminathan, mrudangam, kanjira.

The Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University is located at 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey 07043. Tickets are $20, and are available at the box office, Peak Performances, by calling 973-655-5112. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4, and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.
