Joe McPhee/Joe Giardullo/Michael Bisio/Dominic Duval
No Greater Love
CIMP Recordings

No Greater Love features two basses-the second being the highly sympathetic Michael Bisio-plus McPhee on soprano sax and Joe Giardullo doubling on soprano sax and bass clarinet. The tracks were culled from the remainders of a superb earlier release, In the Spirit (CIMP), that focused on spirituals and their progeny. Here, the same quartet opens with the traditional "Deep River," but then proceeds to a selection of original tunes and improvised pieces. While Duval's role is not critical to the project's success, he does manage fine duos with McPhee and Bisio, and elsewhere participates in the generally uplifting though often contemplative moods.
