Kitty Margolis, a tireless overachiever who tours, records, composes, arranges, runs her own label and even finds time to apply jazz principles to business, Margolis has crafted her latest album, Left Coast Life (Mad-Kat MKCD 1008; 56:18), as a salute to her status as a fourth-generation Californian. The set opens, appropriately, with a sunny “I Want to Be Happy,” then spins, like the state it salutes, in a number of intriguing directions. L.A. gets its comeuppance with a devilishly languorous treatment of Pink Floyd’s “Money,” paired with the coy condescension of Randy Newman’s “Lonely at the Top.” Margolis imbues Tom Wait’s “Take It With Me” with the quiet grace and peaceful grandeur of a Carmel sunset, while her bright, saucy “The Best Is Yet to Come” echoes the Golden State’s unguarded optimism. She truly hits her stride, though, with the album’s two most personal anthems. Dave Frishberg’s “Heart’s Desire” plumbs the depths of her love for the City by the Bay, while Margolis’ own “You Just Might Get It” is her marvelous way of flipping the bird to everybody who doesn’t appreciate the simplicity that defines San Francisco’s cunning beauty.
