Jared Gold: Golden Child

In a post-Joey DeFrancesco/Larry Goldings world, Jared Gold is on the short list of organ players to call to instantly elevate any session. On his fifth outing as a leader, he joins guitarist Ed Cherry and drummer Quincy Davis for a varied program that ranges from a cover of the gospel-tinged Sam Cooke anthem “A Change Is Gonna Come” to reconfigured versions of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” and Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman.” There’s also an ultra-hip shuffle-swing rendition of Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” and a luxuriously bluesy take on “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South.” Originals like the lazy second-line groover “14 Carat Gold,” the delicate waltz-time ballad “Pensa em Mim” and the Larry Young-ish romp “Times Up” showcase Gold’s strengths in this stripped-down organ-trio setting.
