Savina Yannatou: Mediterranea

Mediterranean sounds resound on vocalist Savina Yannatou’s aptly-named new one, Mediterranea, and, also true to the title, the musical lessons are less about a specific culture than a regional way of being. The Greek singer conveys mystical beauty on many of the tracks here, some of the best of which feature only the entrancing sound of her voice alone, but her conceptual agenda goes further: the song set is designed as a tribute to the cultural sweep that encompasses Tunisia, Sicily, the Holy Land and even Provence (as with the traditional tune “La Finforletta”). She is backed by the gifted acoustic ensemble Primavera en Salonico, who give her just the right degrees of support and challenge, and often in transfixing yet fluid odd meters (odd to western ears, of course).
