Ricky Peterson: Souvenir

From electric soul and deconstructionist blues to inward-looking piano ballads, keyboardist Ricky Peterson offers an array of well-constructed, affecting pieces on Souvenir. As a player, Peterson’s range covers stiff-fingered, ripping soul and moody expressionism with equal intensity. These talents are augmented by the work of an outstanding supporting cast: Robben Ford’s sweaty guitar licks sting against Peterson’s blue-retro keyboard atmosphere on the slowburning “Do That Again,” and David Sanborn’s sax is a melancholy duet partner on the stark, haunted melody, “Song for Lon.” Some of the other highlights on Souvenir are driven by the witty, bracing brass hits of The Hornheads, who blissfully dress the ’60s soul of the knuckling “Dropshot,” and creeping “Ignorance Is Bliss.”
