Greg Marvin: Wake-Up Call

On the one side of the brain, this is a thinking person’s jazz, with the brief, arhythmic, meditative opening track and all others issuing from the fertile, well-schooled mind of tenor saxophonist and leader Marvin. On the other side, there’s a playful sharing of lead melodic responsibility between Marvin and fluegelhornist Tom Harrell, which despite its seemingly non-traditional simultaneity actually harkens back to the joyous interactions of early New Orleans jazz. Equally virtuosic is the supportive teamwork of pianist James Williams, bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, all welcoming the listener to a strangely familiar terra incognita.
