Clay Jenkins: Yellow Flowers After

Trumpeter Jenkins makes his label debut leading a team that stretches harmonies and rhythms on nine bop-to-ballad standards and group originals. Familiarity breeds banner jazz, and everyone excels. Jenkins’ title tune and Dameron’s “Soultrane” feature his romantically mellow, open trumpet solos against Steve Houghton’s artistic brushwork, Tom Warrington’s lissome bass, and Reggie Thomas’ canorous piano stylings. Collectively, the foursome enkindles a cliff-hanging, inside-out session that is synchronously cutting-edge and oft-swinging traditional. Yellow Flowers After is a provocative listen that deserves widest discovery.
