Captured live at a hall in Saratoga, CA, guitarist Keys is heard in trio with bassist Tim Hauf and drummer Bob Braye in a program of the familiar (“Once I Loved;” “Willow Weep For Me;” “Little Sunflower”), to not-so-familiar (McCoy Tyner’s “Blues On The Corner”), and two Keys originals. Though a generally well-played, workmanlike guitar trio date, there’s something missing. Perhaps the audience felt it as well, as the applause is generally of the tepid variety. A fourth player, a piano or horn maybe, would have brought much-needed fire to this date. Though this is a concert date, it is played like a casual, incidental music session at a club. “Talent of Keys'” obvious level deserves more spice than this setting afforded.
