Barbara Morrison: I Know How to Do it

Seasoned songstress Barbara Morrison knows extremely well how to sing jazz standards and deep-down blues. Her 25 years performing in Los Angeles, as well as touring to open for stars such as Ray Charles, have honed her voice and style to a fine finish for this quintet album. Morrison’s two-and-one-half octave range is never used just to impress, but to express with sensitivity and grace, particularly on “The Very Thought of You,” “September in the Rain” and “Don’t Explain.” Her deep-down blues approach is solid and swinging, enhanced by veteran trombonist Al Grey on Leonard Feather’s title track and “Don’t Go to Strangers.” In the tradition of Bessie, Ella, Sarah, and Carmen, Barbara Morrison is one of the best around.
