The SFJAZZ organization, presenters of the San Francisco Jazz Festival, has announced the schedule for the fall event, which runs from September 14 through November 20, at various venues throughout the city. The shows will feature artists representing a wide range of jazz styles, including Esperanza Spalding Chamber Music Society, Roy Haynes and his Fountain of Youth Band, Arturo Sandoval, Vijay Iyer Trio, Yellowjackets, Jeff Lorber Fusion with Randy Brecker and Eric Marienthal, Chucho Valdes and many more. In addition, the festival includes some artists outside the boundaries of jazz, such as Rosanne Cash and Lila Downs.

“At SFJAZZ we place importance on the idea of heritage – venerated artists connect us with the fabric of music history,” said Kline in a press release received at JT. “We often say our festivals feature Living Legends and New Directions. This fall, we have assembled a collection of remarkable musical talent from every point on that vast continuum.”

The festival will also host several pre-concert talks with artists. Talks include Henry Threadgill (10/3), Marcus Shelby (10/8), Anat & Avishai Cohen (10/9), Garaj Mahal (10/15), Jon Jang (10/24), Steve Lehman, post-concert (10/28), Bitches Brew Revisited (10/29).. In addition, the festival has long incorporated educational components into its programming, through family matinees and lectures. Among the programs this year is a Discover Jazz series presented by, Bay area bandleader, percussionist and educator John Santos. According to the press release provided by SFJAZZ: “This six-part series will reveal several elements of African origin that form the basis of popular Latin music and Latin jazz, including instrumentation, rhythm, melody and more. During the series, participants will listen to and analyze a broad cross-section of recorded examples from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana/Haiti, the United States and Brazil that span the last century.”

Tickets for shows are available from the SFJAZZ web site or by calling 866-920-5299. You can also go to the SFJAZZ Box Office in 3 Embarcadero Center, where there are no service charges.
