2017 Winter Jazz Festival

Jan 28 - Jan 29, 2017

The 2017 Winter Jazz Festival kicks off on Saturday January 28th at 5:00 pm with a gathering at The Street Space at tpt. Then, at 6:00 pm, film archivist Bob DeFlores partners with the Leigh Kamman Legacy Project to present selections from unique and rare historic jazz films, including The Sound of Jazz (1957) and Theater for A Story (1959). Jazz radio legend Leigh Kamman, who passed away in 2014 after 30+ years of broadcasting jazz on Minnesota Public Radio, worked with DeFlores on many projects. At 7:30 pm the Leigh Kamman Legacy Project will show the evolution of “The Jazz Image” with never heard before interviews, chronologically presented from his days in New York (Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum), KSTP (Woody Herman), KQRS (Henry “Red” Allen at the Monterey Jazz Festival) and an independent trip he took in 1974 to Paris featuring priceless segments with stride piano legend Joe Turner from a jazz club near the Arc de Triomphe. Space is limited so get your tickets early!

The festival carries on throughout Saint Paul as Jon Weber takes the stage at Vieux Carré at 9:00pm, the Rodney Ruckus Group performs at the Black Dog Café at 8:30pm, Jazz Alley performs at Golden’s at 8:30pm and other performances. (Check back for updates). Free with a Festival wristband.

On Sunday January 29th, the Festival continues with performances on four stages at The Saint Paul Hotel from 1:30 to 9:00 pm, headlined by Nicholas Payton, the Sam Rosenstone Trio presented by the Schubert Club, Patty Peterson and Jon Weber. Across the street in Rice Park, The Saint Paul Winter Carnival will also present a series of jazz artists on their free, outdoor Rice Park Stage including Walker West Music Academy at noon and McNasty Brass Band at 1:30 pm.
