5th Annual Monty Alexander Jazz Festival
Aug 28 - Aug 31, 2014
The Monty Alexander Jazz Festival will celebrate its fifth anniversary in Easton on Labor Day weekend from August 28 -31, 2014. The extraordinary energy and virtuosity of Artistic Director Monty Alexander have vaulted the Festival into a four-day event showcasing new talent, as well as jazz greats. Attendance has skyrocketed since its beginning in 2010. This year’s Festival will feature five headliners and a “Salute to Dave Brubeck.”
The fifth anniversary Festival will open on Thursday night, August 28 at 8 p.m. and will feature Frank Vignola in an intimate night club-style concert at Easton’s Academy Art Museum. Vignola’s stunning artistry has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitar List” for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar.” This concert will not be a part of the Festival Pass and the number of seats available will be limited.
Trumpeter Etienne Charles will headline the Monty Alexander Jazz Festival’s Friday night opening at the Avalon Theatre on August 29 at 8 p.m. The “New York Times” called Charles an “auteur” who is “one of jazz most ambitious artists and composers.”
Saturday, August 30 will begin in Thompson Park with New Orleans jazz. The band will then lead a second line parade to the Tidewater Inn where a lunch will precede the afternoon showcase. The Festival will continue with a concert at 2 p.m. at the Avalon Theatre celebrating Dave Brubeck with Bobby Militello, Brubeck’s alto saxophonist who succeeded Paul Desmond, leading the salute. Dave Brubeck’s unique contributions to jazz will be a special moment.
The Saturday night concert at 8 p.m. will feature the incomparable Monty Alexander and his trio, along with Frank Vignola. Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday afternoon, August 31, is returning jazz and gospel virtuoso, Dee Daniels, who will be joined by a local choral group led by Jana Leslie. The Avalon Theatre’s intimate setting and the lineup of world class artists make The Monty Alexander Jazz Festival an Eastern Shore destination for Labor Day weekend.
The Monty Alexander Jazz Festival, presented by Jazz on the Chesapeake, is a program of Chesapeake Chamber Music.
