Yoko Miwa Trio @JazzFest Falmouth 2013
Sep 29, 2013 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM
A native of Kobe, Japan, Yoko Miwa was voted Best Jazz Act in Boston in 2012. Her early classical training gave way to jazz as she honed her skills working as an accompanist in Japanese jazz clubs. Following the great Kobe earthquake of 1995, Miwa auditioned for a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, won first place, and moved to Boston where she formed a strong bond with vocal great Kevin Mahogany, who chose her as his accompanist. After graduating from Berklee, where she is now an assistant professor, Miwa formed her own trio in 2000 and has been on a roll ever since! With five CDs to their credit, the trio plays to sold-out shows in NYC and Boston, and their latest CD, Live at Scullers Jazz Club, was chosen among the Best CDs of 2011 by JazzTimes.

“Miwa displays an impressive stylistic range. Opening with a rousing take of Steve Allen’s “This Could Be the Start of Something,” the pianist and her trio mix a bouncy elegance with a full-bore forward momentum” –All About Jazz
