Boney James

Jul 26 - Jul 28, 2013

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents saxophonist Boney James touring in support of his new release, The Beat. Band members joining Mr. James are Rob Bacon (guitar), Dwayne "Smitty" Smith (bass), Mark Stephens (keys) and Omari Williams (drums). Show times Friday through Sunday at 7:30pm and Friday and Saturday at 9:30pm. Doors at 5:30pm.

Three-time GRAMMY nominee Boney James has returned to former label Concord Records with a dynamic, genre-busting album, The Beat (2013). One of the most successful instrumental artists of our time with sales totaling over 3 million records, James’ new project fuses his R&B/Jazz roots with Latin rhythm and percussion. “This record was born of my love for both Latin and R&B music and became a mash-up of the two genres,” says James. “The initial inspiration for the record was Sergio Mendes’s “Batucada (The Beat),” which I re-imagined as a funk tune.” James produced the record and wrote (or co-wrote) eight songs. Mark Wexler, General Manager/SVP, Concord-Telarc Label Group says, “Boney is one of those unique artists that truly understands his outstanding talent and knows how to blend his originality with what his fans love to hear.” James is equally enthusiastic about re-joining the label, “Concord and I have had great successes, previously, and I couldn’t be more excited to be working with them on one of the best records I’ve ever done.”

“I have never thought of myself as a ‘jazz’ artist specifically,” he says. Of course, this statement may serve as a source of confusion for the musician’s legion of fans that have scooped up over 3 million copies of his twelve albums (with eight of them going to No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart). It also may seem contradictory to the respected opinions of music critics who consider him one of the most influential jazz artists of his generation. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade.” Even so, Boney James, who has four Gold albums, three Grammy® nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit, says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.” In addition to his GRAMMY nominations, James is a Soul Train Award winner (Best Jazz Album) and has been honored with an NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Jazz Album. He has accumulated four RIAA Certified Gold Records. To date, nine of James' albums have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and two have reached the top 10 on the R&B Albums Chart, a rare feat for an instrumental artist. This incredibly accomplished artist, who broke into music in the mid-80s touring with acts such as The Isley Brothers, Morris Day (The Time), Randy Crawford and Teena Marie, and emerged as a solo force in 1992 with his breakthrough debut, Trust, has long been influenced by contemporary R&B.
