Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra
Jul 01, 2013 08:00 AM - 11:30 AM
From its glass encased main dining room showcasing an unobstructed view of the setting sun over the pacific, Typhoon has been proudly serving L.A.’s finest Pan Asian cuisine for more than 18 years, presents an evening of free-swinging orchestral jazz and improvisation with the Grammy-nominated Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra to celebrate their new CD recording of Artistry, a tribute to legendary jazz figure Stan Kenton and his Neophonic Orchestra on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 8 pm, combining the sounds of large ensemble jazz with symphonic colors and textures. Led by saxophone soloist Kim Richmond, the 23-piece orchestra, features expansive instrumentation that includes five woodwinds, four trumpets, three tenor trombones, bass trombone, two French horns, Latin percussion and more. The latest release, Artistry, is a tribute to big band leader Stan Kenton and his Neophonic Orchestra, originally created in 1964 with L.A.’s best jazz and studio musicians. Big, new, Kentonesque jazz and Latin-style compositions pay homage to the size and scope of the master’s kinetic orchestration, rightfully known to music historians as the original “Wall of Sound.”
