Phil Norman Tentet Plays Bob Florence in Rare Los Angeles Concert

Jun 21 - Jun 22, 2013

The Phil Norman Tentet, known for their cool modern west coast jazz roots, performs in a rare Los Angeles concert at Hollywood’s famed Catalina Bar & Grill on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 at 8:30 pm. Led by tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Phil Norman, the 11-piece ensemble will feature the music of Grammy and Emmy award winning Bob Florence, the eclectic and internationally acclaimed jazz composer, arranger, band leader, keyboardist, accompanist and educator. In addition, the Tentet will perform selections from their Totally Live and Encore CDs from arrangers Alan Broadbent, Med Flory, Rusty Higgins, Tom Kubis, Roger Neumann, Kim Richmond, Jackson Stock and Scott Whitfield. Taking their “mini-version of a big jazz band,” The Phil Norman Tentet displays incredible range and creativity. The Encore CD was on JazzWeek’s national airplay chart of the top 50 jazz CD releases for over six months and was ranked as high as number 14.

West Coast jazz refers to various styles of jazz music that developed around Los Angeles and San Francisco during the 1950s. West Coast jazz is often seen as a sub-genre of cool jazz, which featured a less frenetic, calmer style than bebop or hard bop. The music tended to be more heavily arranged, and more often composition-based. While this style was prominent for a while, it was by no means the only style of jazz played on the West Coast, which exhibited more variety than could be conveyed by a simple name. For years, New York was hub of the American jazz scene. But in the 1950's a new sound started coming out of California that challenged the Big Apple's pre-eminence in the world of jazz. This new sound, dubbed "West Coast Jazz," or "West Coast Cool," generated both excitement and controversy.
