Souillac Jazz Festival, Souillac, France
Jul 15 - Jul 21, 2013
The Souillac Jazz Festival was founded in 1976 by local jazz aficionados and Sim Copans, an American radio jazzman who helped popularize jazz in France. The number of festival-goers, as well as the diversity and quality of musicians, has increased ever since.
The festival continues to keep pace with the changing sounds of jazz, offering a dazzling variety of styles, instruments and geographical influences. It prides itself on showcasing trendsetters in jazz and world music as well as devotees of traditional jazz.
This year’s festival (15-21 July) offers affordably priced concerts held in such venues as church squares and underground caves. It also includes a series of free street performances, a jazz walk, a jazz dinner hosted by the local farmers’ market, a jazz organ hour and a film about jazz. Workshops and exhibits round out the events. The festival is run by a team of local volunteers and funded by the town of Souillac, the government and local businesses as part of concerted efforts to contribute to regional development. Souillac is located in the Dordogne Valley of southwest France.
