Special Engagement: Jazz at The Hobby Center
Apr 20, 2013 07:30 AM
The Conrad Johnson Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director James Williams, and Music Doing Good will bring to Houston one of the country’s premier musical talents – Sean Jones. Jones, who Amazon calls a “supremely talented type whose vision and sensibility encourages inclusion,” will join the Conrad Johnson Orchestra in concert at Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall.
Jones is considered among the most expressive, versatile and gifted players of his generation. Jones, the former lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (with Wynton Marsalis), is currently the Artistic Director of the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras. He is also a Professor of Music at Duquesne University.
Jones' sixth CD, “No Need for Words,” sums up his overall approach - music that cuts straight to the heart, passion, sensuality, parental nurturing, or spiritual forgiveness. Regardless of the particular feeling involved, Jones, through his trumpet, communicates directly and movingly. As Jones says, “I like to play from the heart and not the head.”
The Houston based, Conrad Johnson Orchestra, embodies the spirit and vision of the late jazz great Conrad “Prof” Johnson whose influence on jazz in Houston and nationally is legendary. “Prof’s” love of music inspired him to teach, play and direct big band jazz in Houston with a passion that is unparalleled. His compelling story of using music education as a tool to mold young lives is now an emotionally charged documentary on the big screen entitled, “Thunder Soul.” Oscar winner Jamie Foxx served as executive producer.
